Mozambique is recovering from 16 years of civil conflict. The country, situated in south-eastern African has made great strides in moving forward and has become a magnet for foreign investment.

More than 75% of the population engages in small-scale agriculture, which still suffers from inadequate infrastructure, commercial networks and investment.

However, 88% of Mozambique's arable land is still uncultivated.

The cuisine of Mozambique revolves around fresh seafood, stews, corn porridge (maize meal), arroz (rice), millet (a type of grain), and mandioca (cassava).

Meat such as bifel (steak) and frango (chicken) are often accompanied by beans, cassava chips, cashew nuts, coconut, batata (potatoes), and a variety of spices, including garlic and peppers (a Portuguese influence).

Street food stalls located on roadsides, bus stations, and markets around town sell pregos (steak sandwiches), burgers, fried chicken, meat stews and rice.

Fresh seafood is abundant and sold nearly everywhere from street stalls to city restaurants, though it is more available near the coast.
